Wisdom tooth extraction and removal

Are you interested in learning more about wisdom tooth extraction and removal, but perhaps you’re not quite where to start? Not a problem! I will be more than happy to assist you with this.

Is just the mere thought of getting your wisdom teeth extracted causing you a bit of anxiety? If so, please rest assured that it’s actually a relatively simple procedure. Also, the typical amount of recovery time needed for this is often only about two to three days.

Your wisdom teeth can be removed by either your dentist or an oral maxillofacial surgeon. Before extracting your wisdom teeth, you’ll be given either a local anesthetic or a general anesthetic. A local anesthetic works to numb the area where your tooth or/teeth will be removed.

A general anesthetic is sometimes used instead. A general anesthetic works to prevent pain in your entire body, and it will make you fall asleep for the duration of your wisdom tooth extraction procedure. After your surgery, it’s possible that you may need stitches.

There are some stitches that just dissolve on their own. However, there is another type of stitches that require you to go back to your dentist or oral surgeon’s office a few days later. You may experience some bleeding afterwards in the area where your wisdom teeth were removed. If this occurs, you can place a folded up gauze pad against the wound, and this will help to stop the bleeding.

Physical activity can sometimes increase the amount of post-surgical bleeding that’s experienced after wisdom tooth removal. Therefore, try to just relax and take it easy as much as possible after surgery. For the first few days after your wisdom tooth removal, you’ll want to stick to mainly soft foods. Pudding, gelatin, and thin soups would all be suitable choices that you should be able to eat comfortably. If you’re a smoker, be sure to avoid smoking for a minimum of 24 hours after your surgery.

For a number of reasons, smoking not only delays healing, but it can also potentially cause the surgical area to become infected.
